The Ugly King at the TIFF
Toronto International Film Festival : “The most important film festival in the world — the largest, the most influential, the most inclusive.”
The 42nd annual Toronto international film festival will be held from September 7-17. This year’s festival will include 255 feature length films and 84 short films. 147 feature films are having their world premiere during the festival. Toronto Film Festival (TIFF) started out in 1976 and became the most beloved cinematic events in the world. It is an important platform for filmmakers to start their careers and to premier their work.
This year, TIFF will host two productions from Turkey. ‘The Legend of the Ugly King’ directed by Hüseyin Tabak will be on screen during the festival. In this documentary, Tabak is investigating the life of famous director, actor and revolutionary; Yilmaz Güney. Tabak visits different countries where he meets with Güney’s family, his actors, prestigious filmmakers as Michael Haneke or Costa Gavras, former inmates and people on the streets. In this search, he realizes how even someone as revolutionary as Güney can also appear human and vulnerable.
Ayse Kartal’s short film, Kötü Kiz (Wicked Girl) is part of this year’s short cuts program.
Kartal won a prize at the Annecy animation festival with this short film inspired by a true story, depicting its eight-year-old narrator as she remembers her days in her grandparent’s village in Turkey. The memories turn into a narrative almost too tragic to bear.
High-profile and anticipated films slated to screen at the festival this year include romantic sci-fi fable The Shape of Water, mind-bending horror tale mother!, Tragically Hip concert doc Long Time Running and The Battle of the Sexes, based on the epic, real-life tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs.
Every year Hollywood stars are expected at TIFF. This year, Toronto welcomes Angelina Jolie, George Clooney, Drake, Gael Garcia Bernal and Emma Stone, Idris Elba, Ellen Page, Jennifer Lawrence, Priyanka Chopra, Jake Gyllenhaal, Tatiana Maslany, Louis C.K. and Margot Robbie.
