The bashful Musa, a muezzin, feels a bit out of place in Istanbul, even more so when he lays eyes on his reticent neighbour Clara, whom he begins discreetly observing and silently following. Can the proximity of the hesitant man and introverted woman raised by nuns develop into a relationship? And will there be a happy ending to this benevolent tale or will an empty space remain in the characters’ hearts, the opportunity to fill it now passed?

"The plot sounds like something out of a Harold Robbins novel, but Mahmut Fazil Coskun carefully eliminates any hint of melodrama with the spare, measured, observational visuals of his debut, "Wrong Rosary." Set in an Istanbul of windy streets, antiquarian bookstores and seafront cafes, pick underplays all the elements of the impossible love between a young muezzin and a sheltered woman raised to be a nun, making the city itself a character through which the protagonists communicate." Jay Weissberg, Variety

When 17-year-old Meryem is found dishevelled and unconscious by the side of a lake in the Turkish countryside, her family believes the worst - that her chastity has been lost. They turn to the ancient principle of customs, a strict moral code that condemns Meryem to death. When she refuses to take her own life, the duty of upholding the family's honor is given to a distant cousin, Cemal, who has just completed a brutal tour in the military. Cemal reluctantly agrees to take Meryem away - and kill her.

Based on the internationally acclaimed novel by Zülfü Livaneli and set against the backdrop of Turkey's natural wonders, Bliss is an unconventional road movie that pits tradition against modernity, urban against rural and East against West, all the while refusing to settle for easy answers.

Nazim Hikmet, the remarkable 20th century Turkish poet, lived a life of passion and struggle. Convicted for communist propaganda and sentenced to 28 years as World War II raged on the outside, the poet became a legend in the prison system. This biographical drama shows how Hikmet was torn between the love of two women, writing love poems and immortal epics from behind bars, and contemplating suicide. A portrait of the courageous artist, Blue Eyed Giant aims to introduce Hikmet to the youth of his country today, and implores its audience to recognize the beauty of a branded traitor.

Gallipoli is unique in world history: it is not just a battle; it is also an epic tale of courage, self-sacrifice and stubborn endurance. It is also a story of enemies who displayed mutual respect during the battle and who became friends after it. No battle has forged such strong comradeship and everlasting peace in its aftermath. On the shores of Gallipoli, Australia and New Zealand became nations and Turkey embarked on its journey to become a republic from the ruins of an empire. The documentary revolves around few soldiers: Turks, Anzacs, and British. It traces their lives before, during, and after the war, but particularly during. The whole battle, its effects on world history, the general strategy and the leaders of both sides are portrayed around the personal stories of these six soldiers.

Cemil runs away from an abusive stepfather and descends into the hellish world of destitute street children in Istanbul. After murdering her husband, Cemil's mother sets out in pursuit of her son, but is followed by a young family member who is sent to avenge her husband's death and cleanse the family's "honor." A tangled tale of petty crime, drugs, violence, and the harsh reality of life for those living on the streets of Istanbul, the film is interspersed with beautiful shots of the city that only make the viewer more acutely aware of the pressing social problems faced by the city and its poor.

Bilge lives a quiet and comfortable life in Istanbul with her spouse Zeki, daughter Eda and newborn child Alp. The family, who could not take a vacation for a long time due to the busy schedule of Zeki, rent a villa in Fethiye, a resort town in Turkey. The night before they hit the road, an earthquake hits Istanbul. The luxury villa located on a mountain seems wonderful at first glance with its pool and garden, but the graveyard near the house makes them uneasy. Meanwhile in Istanbul, the chaos caused by the earthquake continues. Bilge who lost her mother in the great 1999 earthquake, starts having nightmares. The rest of the family shares her unease as they become aware that strange events occur in and around the villa. Emphasizing the facts that Turkey will continue to be hit by earthquakes and the governments have not done much to protect the people after the devastating earthquake of 1999, screenwriter Dogu Yucel says: “Horror cinema does not only consist of creatures, devils and ghosts. This style also has emotional, intellectual and political content. There may not be any political words in The Little Apocalypse but its subtext is completely political.”

The young Turkish teacher Emre Aydin has been appointed by the government to teach at a school in a remote and impoverished Kurdish village. He arrives in the village at the beginning of the school year to a few unpleasant surprises. There’s no running water in the village and the students don’t show up for class. On the Way to School follows Aydin during the entire academic year. Many families only speak Kurdish at home, so learning Turkish isn not only hard for the kids, but also a sensitive matter as far as the strained relations between Kurds and the Turkish state are concerned. Aydin feels like a foreigner in his own country, but he’s determined to accomplish the task at hand. For the most part, he’s a friendly and patient instructor, but when students write Kurdish words in their notebooks he loses his cool and kicks them all out of class. He then grabs his cell phone and calls home, where his mother lovingly lends him her ear.

“Zymotic Amaurosis” (Contagious Arbitrary Blindness) is a disease caused by a virus, which can capture and store visual information and memories. The film is about a fantastic journey through a book that tells the fragmented story of the remembrances, visions and dreams of a blind man who is subjected to experiments to reveal the visual data that was recorded by the micro-cameras, which were installed in the eyes of an astronaut for a secret mission. After transplanting the eyes of the astronaut to the blind man, they expect to retrieve the recordings through his dreams but they get lost in the surreal absurdity of a complex subconscious.

THE TWO NAMES OF A TESTIMONY ABOUT THE EXECUTION OF A HAPPENING AND A SUITCASE FULL OF BROKEN RECORDS

“This film is dedicated to my father Mehmet Yigit Adam. The film is constructed of series of surreal poetic episodes that take place in the dreams of a sleeping man. The piece involves abstractions on love, romance and the conflict between internal and external realities; existence, death, and the question of possibilities. The imagery in the film expresses these concepts through dreamy sequences edited in such a way to reflect the transient meanings in poetry. The film visualizes the connections between memories, fantasies, expectations and the failures of an individual as he sleeps. The film breaks the rules of traditional narrative structures in cinema, and aims to establish a revolutionary approach that reveals the vast potentials of the mind. It re-invents the visionary aesthetics of the early days of cinema, in the digital age.” Ozan Adam, the Director.

BU SAHILDE / ON THE COAST

On the Coast is a short essay film on the ephemeral feeling of summer, as observed in Erikli, a small coastal town on the Aegean Sea in Turkey. It is common in Turkey, like in most Mediterranean climates, to travel to the coasts for the summer, and settle temporarily. Because of the seasonal relocating of people on the coastline, goods, businesses, and even relationships are transplanted from nearby towns and cities for the summer months. This shift creates an interim lifestyle, a ‘transformed reality’ that shapes the nature of vacation for many people.

Gafur - an extreme Muslim who was brought up to view all aspects of earthly life as an investment in the afterlife. He runs into a streetwalker who looks exactly like his wife (if she were to wear make-up and seductive clothing). He takes a second glance, and, in horror, realizes that the woman could truly be his wife’s identical twin. After a period of spiritual struggle, Gafur considers this a sign from God and decides to take on the mission of “saving” this woman from her perverted and sinful life.

Stepping out of his secluded life, he spends time with the identical twin and experiences the outside world for the first time. This experience slowly drives Gafur into delusion and paranoia.

“Married to the Camera” focuses on some characters: a popular presenter who feels very much at ease on stage but prays for good luck in the backstage; a director whispering in her earphone to guide her in order to make the show more lively, more exciting; a peculiar spectator whose job is to criticize the people who come to marry; audience dancing and clapping when ordered; and a young man dancing to hip hop music without ever being in a disco all his life... all looking for a glimpse of hope in the hallways of that huge TV studio.

And a lot of characters that seem to be there accidentally: a boxer with his gloves, a belly dancer, a 75 year old grand-dad looking for a wife to live the autumn of his life in a nursing home... “Married to the camera...”
